Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design™ (v5)
LEED is the world’s leading green building certification and performance management system, providing a dynamic framework for sustainable design, construction, operations, and ongoing improvement. LEED v5 marks the next evolution of green building standards—placing greater emphasis on Decarbonization, Quality of Life, and Ecological Conservation and Restoration.
Wilsonart products can contribute to earning credits on a LEED-certified projects, typically as part of a finished assembly or permanently installed product. Many Wilsonart High Pressure Laminates (HPL) can contribute to LEED requirements through recycled content, transparency documentation, and indoor air quality certifications that support healthy, sustainable built environments.
MATERIALS AND RESOURCES (MR)
MR CREDIT: REDUCE EMBODIED CARBON
Credits can be gained by demonstrating that projects lower embodied carbon impacts compared to the industry average, with higher reductions yielding more credits. EPD's may be used to demonstrate the lower embodied carbon values and aid in LCA requirements. Applicable in ID+C and BD+C.
REQUIREMENTS
As stated in LEED v5 ID+C Guide: Option 1: "Projects must use project-specific material quantities and identify product-specific or facility-specific Type III EPDs for covered materials to demonstrate reductions." Option 2: "The analysis can be implemented by utilizing software tools that include interior assemblies, by gathering EPDs or product-specific LCAs for interior products, or through a combination of both approaches. The LCA process must be compliant with ISO 14044."
WILSONART CONTRIBUTION
Wilsonart has EPDs available for various products, which are Type III EPDs and comply with ISO 14044, contributing to calculation requirements in both Option 1 and 2.
MR CREDIT: LOW EMITTING MATERIALS
Credits can be gained by ensuring that installed products are below VOC Emission Thresholds to protect indoor air quality. A certain percentage of installed products must meet the threshold requirements for a category, and the more categories met, the more credits earned. Applicable in ID+C and BD+C.
REQUIREMENTS
As stated in LEEDv5 ID+C Guide: "Third-party certification: Product has a qualifying third-party certification, valid at the time of product purchase, that demonstrates testing and compliance according to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Standard Method v1.2-2017 using the private office scenario. Products used in classrooms may be modeled using the schools or private office
scenario."
WILSONART CONTRIBUTION
The following Wilsonart Products meet UL Greenguard Gold or SCS Indoor Advantage Gold Certification for indoor air quality, which meets the credit's requirement for third-party VOC emissions certification. Depending on the use case, it could contribute to both the walls and furniture categories.
WILSONART DOCUMENTATION
MR CREDIT: BUILDING PRODUCT SELECTION AND PROCUREMENT
Credits can be earned by using products and materials that have sustainability information available and that have environmentally, economically, and socially preferable impacts in alignment with industry momentum. There are 5 categories a product can demonstrate achievement in (Climate Health, Human Health, Ecosystem Health, Social Health and Equity, and Circular Economy). There is a higher value for products that achieve in 2 or more categories. There are also multipliers as indicated by achievement levels 1-3. Applicable in ID+C and BD+C, with fewer total credits possible in BD+C.
REQUIREMENTS
As Stated in LEEDv5 ID+C Guide, "This credit incentivizes projects to prioritize more environmentally responsible materials and choose products with multiple eco-friendly attributes. It emphasizes interior materials, such as paints, coatings, flooring and walls, and considers their impact on the overall environmental performance of the project. "
WILSONART COMPLIANCE AND CERTIFICATION DOCUMENTS
WILSONART CONTRIBUTION
Wilsonart products can be eligible for this credit through the Furniture or Walls category, depending on use case, and can qualify for several criteria areas, as noted by Wilsonart's many certifications and transparency documents, such as Post-Consumer Recycled Content Certifications, FSC Certifications, EPDs, HPDs, Declare Labels, Greenguard Gold, and SCS Indoor Advantage Gold Certifications, among others. Wilsonart HPL is an Industry leader when it comes to post-consumer recycled content at 23%, which is 2X more than any other leading laminate brand. Furthermore, thanks to Wilsonart's AEON™ Technology, Wilsonart HPL surfaces are 3X more resistant to wear, scratches, and scuffing, increasing longevity and thus reducing waste compared to other laminates.
MR CREDIT: INTERIOR MATERIAL REUSE
Credits can be gained by reusing Furniture and Interior nonstructural elements, where the higher percentage reused, the more credits gained in this category. Applicable in ID+C, BD+C, and partially in O+M via MRc1 - Waste Reduction Performance.
REQUIREMENTS
As stated in LEEDv5 ID+C Guide, "This credit encourages projects to reuse existing building materials. Option 1 rewards projects that reuse existing interior nonstructural elements and furniture (on-site reuse). This option offers two different pathways for projects. Path 1 addresses interior nonstructural materials and furniture, while Path 2 solely addresses furniture. Option 2 requires projects to identify opportunities to procure materials from off-site sources and rewards the reuse of both targeted and other materials."
WILSONART RE-COVER™
WILSONART CONTRIBUTION
Any furniture that includes Wilsonart products, such as desks, tables, cubicles, storage, and more, that can be reused or salvaged during renovation can contribute towards the furniture recovery credit. In cases where the furniture has significant wear or a new style is desired, Wilsonart Re-Cover™ can be used to repair or replace surfaces, allowing old furniture to be refurbished and reused.
