Empowering History: Wilsonart at Niagara Parks Power Station
Few destinations capture the raw power and beauty of nature like Niagara Falls. To transform that energy into an unforgettable visitor experience, Niagara Parks Power Station underwent a thoughtful reinvention led by +VG Architects. The challenge was clear: preserve the historic structure while introducing innovative materials that support a high-traffic attraction. Wilsonart® engineered surfaces made it possible, layering durability, performance, and modern style for a space deeply rooted in history.

From the moment guests step inside, an ambitious design narrative is evident in every corner of the vast building. Historic architecture and original industrial elements remain at the forefront, while modern Wilsonart surfaces introduce warmth, sophistication, and functionality throughout the experience.
The reception area serves as a defining statement. A custom desk fabricated entirely from Wilsonart® Solid Surface features Beige Travertine and Grey Lace flowing together in a wave-inspired form
that mirrors the movement of water. The sculptural effect transforms the reception desk into more than a functional surface — it becomes a visual tribute to the Niagara River itself.
The intricate design was made possible through the thermoformability of Wilsonart® Solid Surface. With proper woodworking tools and innovative material flexibility, the fabrication team created seamless curves and custom contours that are difficult to achieve with traditional stone.

“We wanted to use older elements in the space while creating newer elements with Wilsonart surfaces. It’s a very unique building. The challenge was updating an industrial environment into an interactive space for guests while preserving its original beauty.” |

Throughout the attraction, Wilsonart surfaces reinforce the balance between preservation and reinvention. In the washrooms, Solid Surface in the Milk Glass Spectra design creates a soft, translucent aesthetic across countertops and sink areas. The subtle cream-white tone brightens the historic interior while maintaining a calm, welcoming atmosphere for guests. Myers reflects on the intentional material selection, saying, “Even in the washrooms, we tried to preserve the original beauty of the Power Station while maintaining a welcoming guest experience.”
Beyond aesthetics, performance and cost-effectiveness played a critical role for the team at +VG Architects. In heavily visited public
spaces, seamless and non-porous Solid Surface helps simplify maintenance while supporting cleanliness and long-term durability — which are essential qualities for an attraction welcoming visitors from around the globe.
Wilsonart surfaces are also considerably more economical than natural materials, particularly for large commercial projects. Myers says, “I have a great relationship with my Wilsonart representative, so that made the choice for surface materials pretty easy. Many of the designs we selected emulate the look of architectural stone without breaking the bank.”

Thinscape: Italian Carrara TS503
Thinscape in Italian Carrara introduces another layer of modern sophistication as a stunning, nature-inspired backdrop for the Solid Surface reception desk. Unlike a traditional countertop, the material was incorporated vertically as a decorative half-wall and integrated planter filled with live greenery. The contrast between industrial metal, natural foliage, and marble-inspired luxury creates a striking visual moment that softens the surrounding environment.
Thinscape proved especially valuable for this application because of its lightweight construction, slim profile, and water-resistant performance. At only ½-inch thick, the material delivers a minimalist appearance while accommodating the irrigation requirements necessary to sustain the live plants.

“Thinscape is incredibly durable and lightweight while offering sleek beauty at only half an inch thick. More importantly, it’s water resistant, which makes it ideal for supporting the irrigation system and elevating the horticultural elements in the space.” |

A final High Pressure Laminate (HPL) selection further supports the modern guest experience throughout the reception area. Cabinetry and drawer fronts in Satin Stainless introduce subtle industrial styling with cool grey tones that complement the surrounding architecture with the added utility of functional storage. The durable HPL surfaces withstand constant daily use while maintaining a clean, refined appearance over time.
The Power Station successfully merges past and present — preserving the authenticity of a celebrated industrial icon while creating a dynamic experience that inspires every visitor. More than a preserved building, the space demonstrates how thoughtful material selection can transform historic architecture into engaging environments built for the future.
