Structured, deep finishes are made up of hollows and reliefs. When cutting or machining, the tool opens up these hollows and locally exposes the material underneath the decorative layer, which is lighter than the decor itself. Light then catches the edge differently and a fine light line can become visible, particularly on dark decors where the contrast is most noticeable.

This effect is inherent to the structure of the finish and to the machining process: it does not indicate a manufacturing defect in the panel.

A few good practices greatly reduce its visibility:

• Use a perfectly sharp tool suited to machining HPL. A worn or blunt tool increases micro-chipping.
• Adapt your cutting parameters (rotation speed, feed rate, depth of pass) to your equipment and to the tool used.
• Run a trial before the production run, on an offcut of the same panel, with the same decor, the same finish, the same tool and the same settings.
• Soften visible edges with a slight radius (1 to 2 mm) or a chamfer (1x1 or 2x2 mm), which visually eases the transition between the structured surface and the edge.
• Take extra care with dark decors, where contrast makes the effect more perceptible.
